Three ways to resize dynamic volume in Windows Server 2008, 2003

Windows Server 2008 is newly released server operation system, providing improved disk management. Users of this edition feel much easier to resize dynamic volume. Windows Server 2008 offers two build-in disk utilities for users to manage dynamic disk, one is Disk Management, and the other one is Diskpart.exe, insufficiently solved problems of storage space to some extend.

To resize a volume using Diskpart.exe

As to simple volume and spanned volume, it is easy to resize. Windows Server 2008 provides a hard disk utility which needs users to input command lines. It directly displays the process of extending or shrinking. You can follow steps below to resize partitions:

  1. Enter command prompt and type "Diskpart".

  2. At the DISKPART prompt, type "list volume". Make note of the number of the simple/spanned volume you want to resize.

  3. Then, type "select volume" with volume number. Selects the simple/spanned volume you want to resize.

  4. Then type extend [size=n] [disk=n] [noerr]. Extend the selected volume to desired size in megabytes (MB). Or type shrink [desired=] [minimum=] to shrink the select volume.

To resize a volume using the Windows interface

If you are not good at command line, you can use Windows Disk Management to resize partition. You can follow steps below:

  1. Right click on My Computer, and choose Management in drop-down menu.

  2. Enter Disk Management. Right click on the partition to give it focus.

  3. Click Shrink Volume…

  4. Follow the instruction to complete shrinking.

NOTICE: these two ways only work on simple volume and spanned volume

To shrink volume by converting dynamic disk to basic

As solutions described above cannot resize striped volume, mirrored partition and RAID 5, it is highly recommended to convert dynamic disk to basic first, then resize partitions of basic disk. It can save a lot of time on resizing, and protect data from lost. You can use dynamic disk converter to convert all types of dynamic volume available in Windows server 2008.

You can choose to convert volume or a disk

When dynamic disk converted to basic, it is easier to resize. You can then use Partition Assistant Server Edition to shrink partition. This utility can help you resize partition within a few minutes, and protect data form loss (it can work on Windows 7/8/Vista/XP and Server 2003/2008/2011/2012).

User-friendly interface

After resizing, you can use dynamic disk converter to convert basic disk back to dynamic volumes again. In conclusion, it is realizable to resize common type dynamic volumes under Windows Server 2008. You can choose different ways described above to shrink partition or resize dynamic volume based on your needs.
