About dynamic disks

Dynamic disks support unlimited number of volumes in the Windows XP Professional, Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003, windows 7 and Windows 2008; it does not include their home edition. Dynamic disks possess more advantages than basic volume and were first applied with Windows 2000 and support more flexibility for volume management. It has five types of Dynamic volumes: Simple Volume, Striped Volume, Spanned Volume, Mirrored Volume, and RAID 5 Volume. Here we talk about how to extend simple volume to spanned volume on dynamic disks with the Windows built-in disk management tool.

Method to extend simple volume to spanned volume

Step 1, Click right of "my computer" and into the disk management, it will show you:

On the assumption that my computer has a new volume E, and it is allocated, but, I wish to storage more data and files into it, how we can do? At this time, a spanned volume is essential; we need to extend simple volume to spanned volume on dynamic disks.

Step 2, click right on new volume E, selects "Extend Volume":

All are end here. You get another New Volume E to extend your simple volume. But, we know dynamic volume has five types: Simple Volume, Striped Volume, Spanned Volume, Mirrored Volume, and RAID 5 Volume. Built-in disk management just provide convenience for extend simple volume to spanned volume. The three volumes: striped, mirrored and RAID5 volume can not be extended.

How could we take advantage of other three dynamic volumes? Maybe some third party software could be much help, for instance, if you need to resize Mirrored Volume, Dynamic Disk Converter can assist in converting dynamic disk to basic one, after you finished resize Mirrored Volume with Partition Manager, it will also make you convert basic disk to dynamic and again add mirror for the volume.
