How to Convert Dynamic Partition to Basic Partition in Windows

Windows Setup and Disk Management ensure that disks initialized by can be converted to dynamic disk. Dynamic disk provides features that basic disk does not, such as the ability to create multi-disk volumes, such as spanned, striped, mirrored, and RAID5 volumes. Before you convert disks, we suggest you to close any programs that are running on those disks.

After you convert a basic disk to a dynamic disk, any existing partitions on the basic disk become (dynamic partition) simple volumes. You cannot directly convert/change the dynamic partition to basic partition. Dynamic disks cannot be directly accessed by MS-DOS, Windows 95/98/Me/NT, and Windows XP Home, Vista Home and Windows 7 Home Edition, so you cannot start these operating systems on dynamic disks. You can change dynamic partition to basic by two ways; one is as follows:

• Start the Disk Management tool.
• Back up all volumes on the dynamic disk.
• Delete all volumes from the dynamic disk.
• Right-click the dynamic disk and choose Revert to Basic Disk.
• Recreate the volumes as partitions on the new basic disk.
• Move and restore the previous data back.

Note: The dynamic disk must be empty before you can convert it back to basic disk. If you want to keep your data, back it up or move it to another volume before you convert dynamic partition to basic. This way is relatively cumbersome, and need you backup, delete and restore.
