What is the disadvantage of basic disk?

The concept of the basic disk

Basic Disk uses Partition Table to manage its partition. One Basic Disk contains both primary partitions and extended partition, and many logical partitions are contained in extended partition. You should create partitions on basic disks if you want computers running Microsoft Windows 98 or earlier, or MS-DOS to access these partitions. Here is a detailed article of the basic disk "What is basic disk?"

Basic Disk's disadvantages

  • Partition or Volume’s maximum capacity is limited to 2TB
On the basic disk, the maximum capacity of a partition (volume) can be only 2TB. If a basic disk capacity is greater than 2TB, so that part of the excess capacity would not be used. It’s the characteristic is mainly depending on the partition table, because indicated the field of a partition size only support 2TB at most. For large disk or large partition, Windows uses Dynamic disk or GPT disk to support them. Dynamic disk and GPT disk are no longer used to manage partitions (volumes), so they can well handle the large partition of more than 2TB.
  • The creation of new partition is limited to a single disk
On the basic disk, a partition’s usable capacity is limited to a single disk, so the partition can not together use two or more disk capacity. All partitions on basic disk can not afford to span multiple disks. On dynamic disk utilize Spanned Volume and Striped Volume to fulfill span.
  • I/O operation is limited
On the basic disk only synchronized read and write its data, because the data on basic disk is unable to be spread in multiple disks. Therefore, at the same time only read and write data from one place within a single disk. On dynamic disk, use Striped Volume and RAID-5 Volume to spread data to multiple disks, so boost up IO performance.
  • Lack of fault-tolerant
In the basic disk, first, its partition table information is only one, if the one is damaged and causing all partitions on the disk to be lost; followed, the basic partition itself does not provide fault-tolerant, which means that the partitions on basic disk loss of data would be difficult to restore. In a dynamic disk by using Mirrored Volume or RAID-5 Volume to boost up fault-tolerant itself.
